2009 Championships - Format Rules and Timtable

Format:

  1. There are 14 teams entered including a “house team” which will be made up each week to avoid a bye.
  2. There will be seven rounds of qualifying. Teams have been seeded into to evenly matched pools of 7. In qualifying each team in pool A will play each team in pool B. Each round will be of 12 boards commencing 8pm each Monday night. The top 2 teams from pool A and the top two teams from pool B will qualify for the final. The 3rd and 4th teams from each pool will qualify for the plate. The remaining 6 teams will play a consolation event.
  3. After qualifying there will be a final for the top two teams from each pool, a plate competition for the 3rd and 4th teams from each pool and a consolation event for the remaining 6 teams.
  4. The Final and the Plate will each be separate three round, round robin events of 12 board matches commencing 8pm each Monday night. The formula for these Round Robins will be:

    Round 1: 1v4 2v3
    Round 2: 3v1 2v4
    Round 3: 1v2 4v3
  5. The consolation will be a swiss draw of 3 x 12 board matches commencing 8pm each Monday night.

Rules:

  1. IMP scoring will be used with the results being converted to Victory Points. Results will be collated from BBO records and there is no need for Captains to submit results. Captains should, however, check results once published and point out any mistakes.
  2. Each week the draw (including team line-ups) will be published by 7.00 pm by email to all captains and by publication on the kiwi teams blog site at http://kiwiteams.blogspot.com/.
  3. The team named first on the draw is the home team. The captain of the home team is responsible for creating the match on BBO. Instructions on creating matches are on the blog site at http://kiwiteams.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-to-set-up-kiwi-teams-matches-on-bbo.html.
  4. The captain of the home team chooses who “sits” where and thus which of his/her pairs play which opposition pairs. Any team without a captain able to create the match in any particular round will lose home team advantage.
  5. If any player is not online and available to commence the match at 8pm the captain setting up the match shall immediately arrange a replacement, by calling for all comers from the Lobby if necessary.
  6. Positions after qualifying and final positions will be determined by Victory Points. For the final, plate and consolation there will be a carryover from qualifying of 40%.
  7. Teams must play each round. Outside substitutes are allowed. Any team defaulting will score no victory points for the round. The opponents of any team defaulting shall receive 18 VPs or the average number of VPs won by the team in all its other matches in the stage (including later matches), or the average number of VPs won by the opponents of the forfeiting team in matches played against that team in the stage (including later matches), whichever is the greater.
  8. Ties will be broken by net imps. If net imps are equal the result of any head to head match between the tied teams will be used. Any remaining tie will be broken, if possible, by a 4 board head to head match arranged before the next round or within one week after the final round. If this is not possible the remaining tie will be broken by the toss of a coin.
  9. Kiwi Teams rules apply to all matches:

Undo’s are allowed but should be used for genuine mis-clicks only.
    The Barometer is on.
    Kibbitzers are allowed.
Kiwi (NZ Bridge) alerting and pre-alerting rules apply.
(The NZ Bridge manual which contains these rules (at pages D38 to D41) is available online at http://nzbridge.co.nz/2009%20Manual.pdf).
  10. Please note that alerting on BBO is different to over the table alerting. Each player must alert their OWN bids. This is sometimes referred to as “self alerting”. Do not confuse this with NZ Bridge rules as to “self alerting” calls which are referred to in 15 below.
  11. To alert your bid either click the alert button before making your bid or click on your bid after you have made it. Next, type a brief description of your bid in the box provided, then hit the “enter” key. Your alerts can only be seen by your opponents and cannot be seen by your partner. Accordingly there is no harm in over alerting because your partner is never aware of your alerts. Equally you can privately ask either opponent about a particular bid by clicking on the opponents bid. This will prompt a box to come up on the opponents screen for an explanation to be typed in. In addition you can privately provide further information about your bid to both opponents simultaneously by using the ç è button at the bottom of the screen. All of this asking and telling should be done privately (rather than to the whole table) so that your partner never knows what is being asked or told.
  12. For non New Zealanders please note that all doubles, redoubles, cue bids, strong 2c openers, 2c stayman bids and 4 level or higher bids are “self alerting” calls. You should not alert them (although for BBO play where partner does not see the alert there is no harm in alerting them). Opponents are expected to ask about these calls if they wish to know. However, unusual agreements regarding these calls which may surprise opponents should be pre-alerted at the start of the match.
  13. There are no prizes for winning or otherwise L. Just Glory!!!

Lucky Lotto Ladder Cancelled, Club Champs coming soon

We only had four teams entered for the Luckly Lotto Ladder. This is not a viable number so it has been cancelled. We will just have casual matches on Mondays until the "Club Champs" start on the 20th July.

The "Club Champs" will run for 10 weeks finishing just before the NZ National Congress. There will be a round robin pool qualifying stage and a final/consolation format after that. There may even be a head to head final depending on the numbers and format. All games will be played in the 8 pm time slot. I'm accepting entries now, they will close on 19th July.

Please start getting your teams organised now for this event. It will be a great chance to practise for Congress or a great chance for Interprovincial Teams to practice.

Homers Heros take out Winter Swiss

Congratulations to Homers Heros who extended the daylight between them and the rest of the Winter Swiss field with a 19-11 win over Breg tonight.

Drum Roll please for the full 2009 Winter Swiss awards:

Champions: Homers Heros
Plate: Tiger-Bees
Consolation: Ojays

In the plate Tiger-bees secureed their win with a 20-10 over Online Go Girls. They were chased hard though by the Musketeers who also had a good win but 22-8 was not quite enough and even a 25 would have seen them 1.4 VPs short.

The real excitement was in the Consolation. The Masters went into their match against Ojays 8 VPs ahead and their superior net imps meant that so long as they didn't lose by more than 11-19 they would be ok. Ojays went into the last board 8 imps ahead. That converts to only a 17-13 result. On Board 12 N/S were cold for a vulnerable 4h but there was no way to make 5. Ikanarat and judz1 found a good dive of 5c which pushed The Masters N/S to 5. They will be kicking themselves for not doubling. At the other table E/W were a little unlucky not to find their club fit and 4h were bid and made for 12 imps to the Ojays. That pushed the difference out to 20 imps which converts to (you guessed it) 20-10 and the Ojays were home by the narrowest of margins.

Winter Swiss - Standings after Round 2 Post Qualifying

Homers Heros tighten grip

Homer's Heros tightened their grip on the title of Winter Swiss Champions this week. They had a resounding 25-1 win over the House team. With one week to go they are well clear of the field. Second placed Breg can snatch the title but they will have to win by 25-5 or better!

In the plate its a three way race. Tiger-bees are on top after their 25-2 win this week. They need 19 VPs next week to stay there. However, their third placed opposition, Online Go Girls, can overtake them with a 22-8 win or better. In second place are the Musketeers who may sneak through if they have a win AND if the result of the other match is kind to them.

In the consolation it is a two way tussle between The Masters and Ojays. The Masters are in the box seat but if Ojays win by 20-10 or better it will be the latter who get the Consolation.

Homer's Heros take handy lead

Homer's Heros had a big win tonight to give them an 11 VP lead in the Final of the Winter Swiss. Breg remain in second after a modest win.

Online Go Girls have shot to the lead in the the plate event which is very close. They had a 18-12 win whilst former leaders; Tiger-bees had the narrowest of losses to Musketeers (14-16). Tiger-bees remain in second but you could put a blanket over the whole plate field.

The Masters are dominating in the consolation after a 24-6 win tonight. Not far away in second are Ojays who won 20-10 tonight.

There is no play next week due to Queens Birthday weekend but after that there is just two rounds on the 8th and 15th June to complete the event.

An email will be sent to all players on tarakiwi's distribution list advising of Matt's email address. If you are not on the list you should message veryeavy on BBO giving him your email address so he can add you to his distribution list.

Field Sorted for Winter Swiss Finals

The final round of qualifying tonight has sorted out the teams which will now slog out three rounds of round robin for the final, plate and consolation titles.

A top of the table draw saw Homer's Heros and Breg maintain their respective first and second places. They are joined in the top four by the House team who had a stunning 23-7 upset over the Musketeers to elevate themselves to third. Meanwhile Youthz & Oldz stung the Tiger-bees after illness to one of the "olds" (Tom Jacob) paved the way for wife (and mother), Steph, to come in and show them how it was done! Their 20-10 win took them to fourth.

Leading the plate (and favourites for it) are Tiger-bees. Online Go Girls had an 18-12 win over the Masters to slot in at 6th. Hugh's BBC and Musketeers will also compete for the plate.

The remaining four teams will fight it out for the Consolation. They all get a clear sheet with no carry over.

One interesting quirk is that after round 1 if you had swapped the Musketeers and the House team you would have the same teams filling top 4, middle 4 and bottom four as have done so after a further four rounds of swiss qualifying. Makes you wonder why we bothered playing all those rounds I guess! :-)

Winter Swiss - Standings after Round 2

Reviewing Hands played on BBO

In my opinion one of the best features of BBO is that you can always review every hand played afterwards. Its better than just getting a hand record. You can go over every hand, trick by trick and card by card. You can even get GIB to do a double dummy analysis on a trick by trick basis (this feature works best with "lin" files). Here's some information on how to review hands:

  1. The best way of reviewing a match that you have played is to do the following:
Using the same computer that you played the match on open bridge base (without logging on).
Then click the bottom button called “Open Bridge Movie from your Computer”.
Double click on the folder which is named with your BBO name (eg tarakiwi).
  2. You should now have a list of all the BBO sessions that you have played on that computer. Teams matches will be named something like “Tournament ### 03 26 08”. Where ### is a unique tournament number assigned to your match and 03 26 08 is the date of the match in (US) mm dd yy order. You may have to scroll along the grey scroll bar at the bottom of the box to find the right file (they are in alphabetical order). Double click on the appropriate file and Voila! You now have the full record of the match. If you click on any result you get the full record of the hand which you can replay card by card! Even better you can get to see (card by card) the full record of what team mates did. It’s great for “apportioning the blame!”.
  3. Alternatively you can do much the same thing by clicking this link. Enter your (BBO) user name (eg “tarakiwi”) click “get hands” and you get all the hands you have played on BBO in the last two days. (You can adjust the time to retrieve up to one months worth of hands.)

2009 Winter Swiss – Format, Rules and Timetable

Format:

  1. There are 12 teams entered including a “house team” which will be made up each week to avoid a bye.
  2. There will be five rounds of qualifying with a random draw for the first round and a swiss draw thereafter. Each round will be of 12 boards commencing 8pm each Monday night.
  3. After qualifying there will be a final for the top four teams, a plate competition for teams 5 to 8 and a consolation event for the remaining teams. These will each be separate three round, round robin events of 12 board matches commencing 8pm each Monday night. The formula for the Round Robins will be:

    Round 1: 1v4 2v3
    Round 2: 3v1 2v4
    Round 3: 1v2 4v3

Rules:

  1. IMP scoring will be used with the results being converted to Victory Points. Results will be collated from BBO records and there is no need for Captains to submit results. Captains should, however, check results once published and point out any mistakes.
  2. Each week the draw (including team line-ups) will be published by 7.00 pm by email to all captains and by publication on this blog site.
  3. The team named first on the draw is the home team. The captain of the home team is responsible for creating the match on BBO. Instructions on creating matches are on the blog site here.
For the final and the plate there will be a carryover from qualifying of 40%. For the consolation there will be no carryover.
  8. Ties will be broken by Swiss Points, then by net imps. Any remaining tie will be broken, if possible, by a 4 board head to head match arranged before the next round or within one week after the final round. If this is not possible the remaining tie will be broken by the toss of a coin.
  9. Kiwi Teams rules apply to all matches:
    - Undo’s are allowed but should be used for genuine mis-clicks only.
    -The Barometer is on.
    - Kibbitzers are allowed.
    - Kiwi (NZ Bridge) alerting and pre-alerting rules apply.
(The NZ Bridge manual which contains these rules (at pages D38 to D41) is available online here).
  10. Please note that alerting on BBO is different to over the table alerting. Each player must alert their OWN bids. This is sometimes referred to as “self alerting”. Do not confuse this with NZ Bridge rules as to “self alerting” calls which are referred to in 12 below.
In addition you can privately provide further information about your bid to both opponents simultaneously by using the <==> button at the bottom of the screen.
  13. There are no prizes for winning or otherwise :-( Just Glory!!! :-)

Close Matches in first round of November Knockout

The November Knockout got underway tonight with three relatively close matches. The BERGlars prevailed over Mintt's Moments by 16 imps whilst the Palmy Punters had a winning margin of 15 over KAMM Carr's. The story of the round however came in the match between Auckland Tigers and DEAP Thinkers. The latter were ahead by 4 imps going into the last Board. At one table they chose to defend a vulnerable 3d doubled whilst at the other they defended 3s not vul and undoubled. Unfortunatly 3d made 5 and the net result was -14 imps.

The good news for DEAP Thinkers is that their 10 imp loss was the narrowest of the three losses which means that they are straight through to the plate final on 24th November.

The semi-finals for the Cup will be played on 17th November. They will be fought out between this weeks winners together with Homers Heros who, as top seeds, had the bye this week. Full details of all teams and how the draw works are at http://kiwiteams.blogspot.com/2008/11/draw-and-details-for-november-knockout.html.

Draw and Details for November Knockout

We have ended up with 7 teams in the November Knockout. Seven teams is not ideal but is manageable. All teams will get at least two “live” games. Teams who have a bye will always be provided with a casual game unless they specifically ask, before 5pm on the Monday, that they not play at all.

The teams entered are:

Homers Hero’s: patricck/quikjanz & barry/jenm
BERGlars: gerry/tarakiwi & diatribe/bruzo
Palmy Punters: ljs/noelwz & janwhy/ken436
DEAP Thinkers: davetaupo/paul3210 & buch99/blinkers
Auckland Tigers: hoki/gogga & tigerboy/clavis
KAMM Carr’s: kotuku/acolitecs & manawa/mccullagh
Mintt’s Moments: glennis/gillyfleur & jaymac/mintt

The seeded draw for round 1 is:

Match 1: BERGlars: gerry/tarakiwi & diatribe/bruzo v Mintt’s Moments: glennis/gillyfleur & jaymac/mintt
Match 2: KAMM Carr’s: kotuku/acolitecs & manawa/mccullagh v Palmy Punters: ljs/noelwz & janwhy/ken436
Match 3: Auckland Tigers: hoki/gogga & tigerboy/clavis v DEAP Thinkers: davetaupo/paul3210 & buch99/blinkers

Homers Hero’s: patricck/quikjanz & barry/jenm have been seed straight into the semi final. However they will still have a “casual” match tonight as follows:

Match 4: Homers Hero’s: patricck/quikjanz & barry/jenm v Stroppy Gamblers: gambler3/stroppy & minuet/andrewnz

Please note that captains are named first and it is the responsibility of the captain of the first named (home) team to set up the match. The home team captain chooses which pairs play each other.

Rounds 2 and 3:
Next week Homers Heros will play the winner of Match 3 and the winners of Matches 1 and 2 will play off. The winners of these matches will contest the final on the 24th November and the losers will play off for 3rd and 4th.

The Plate event will run as follows. The losing team from week 1 who loses by the least margin will qualify for the plate final and will only play a “casual” match next week. The other two losers will play off for the right to contest the plate final. The loser of that match will just play a casual match on the 24th November. The least loser from round 1 and the winner of the round 2 match will play off for the Plate on 24th November.

May the best team win!

Climbers reach the top

It's been and long and fraught ascent but the Central Climbers made it to the top of the ladder last night. The Snakes, who had beaten them twice previously, and who probably have the best overall record in the competition, self destructed in the last two boards. Earlier on they had given up 5 imps as a result of a misclick which wasn't noticed in time to use the undo button. It was a portent of things to come. With 3 boards to go it was 22-11 to the Snakes. Then nikzti/suescott for the snakes doubled and caught the weak 1nt. gerry/tarakiwi of the climbers wriggled and squirmed (snakes would have been proud of them) but nikzti/suescott kept their bottle and kept doubling. They collected 1100 against a vul game at the other table. It was now 32-11 to the Snakes and that should have been that. Next board nikzti/suescott had a gerber accident and played in 4c which gave 11 imps. On the final board at the other table jonz continued the kiwi teams tradition of strange and unusual things happening on the last board of matches by finding a different kind of abberation. She was declaring 3nt after partner had trasferred to spades. A cow flew by which momentarily distracted her into thinking she was playing in spades. The result was a vulnerable game swing and the final result 35-32 to the Climbers.

The bronze medal play off saw The Masters convincingly beat Western Gals 34-1. I don't have any details of this match. Perhaps one of the participants could post a comment filling us in.

In other mathes the higher teams prevailed so that the only change in the final week was at the top.

So (drum roll) I hereby present the medals:

Gold: - Central Climbers

Silver: - Snakes

Bronze: - The Masters

Thanks to all who participated. Running a ladder was a bit of an experiment and I'm not sure whether or not it worked that well and whether in future we would be best to try knock-outs, round-robins and/or swiss events. I would REALLY appreciate your feedback. Please post your comments below. See http://kiwiteams.blogspot.com/2008/09/posting-of-comments.html for how to post comments.

Snakes Secure Second

The Snakes won a close fought encounter against the Masters last night to maintain their spot at the top of the ladder. With only one week to go and with the last round involving first against second the Snakes cannot now finish worst than second. Of course they will be hoping for another win next week against Central Climbers, a team they have beaten twice already in this event. Central Climbers may be coming into form however as they sucessfully defended their second spot against previous leaders First Sun.

Lower down Western Gals and Judy + North Shore both won against teams below them meaning that for the first time in the event there was no change to the ladder positions.

It was a cruel slam hand which decided the fight for the top spot. You hold xx Kx AKJxxx Axx. Partner deals and opens with the auction starting 1s - 2d - 3s. After that you find out that you and partner hold all the aces and all the kings. Do you sign off, bid slam or grand slam? Who knows? I'm waiting for someone who knows more about biding than me to write the hand up! What I can tell you is that tuckaway opted for 7s. Cruelly that cost 22 imps as there is always one loser (a trump) and the hand was played in 4s on a slightly different auction at the other table. The Snakes won 32-19 so the result would have been different if tuckaway had opted for 6s!

Ladder Positions after Round 8

1. Snakes: susiecue, janwhy, nikzti, suescott, jonz, boatman.
2. Central Climbers: gerry, tarakiwi, kermit, cascade, diatribe.

Snakes Slither to Summit

The ladder had a big shake up this week as the draw contained matches where teams were generally 4 or 5 rungs apart. This was necessary in order to avoid having too many repeat matches.

The big match was the leaders, First Sun, up against the 5th placed Snakes. Aggressive game bidding by the Snakes on boards 3 and 4 saw a double game swing and a vulnerable swing to net 27 imps and effectively end the contest. First Sun fought on well but the Snakes ended their reign of 3 weeks at the top win a 46-25 win.

Central Climbers have risen to the second rung with a good win against Aussie Flavoured. It seems that their alternate name of Central Celler Dwellars will no be required. This team seems to have finally struck form with some being unkind enough to suggest that it was no co-incidence that tarakiwi was at the rugby last night!

In previous weeks, despite the reverse grid, lower runged teams have really struggled to beat their higher ranked opponents. The week The Masters were the only team to fend off the challenge from below. In a very close match the 13 imps exchanged on board 4 proved decisive. A very difficult 6nt was available. Tuckaway and Mastersg signed off in 5nt. Buch99 and Clarkson bid 6nt at the other table but buch99 couldn't quite bring it in. The Masters survived 25-21.

The previously unlucky Western Gals scored a 43-4 win against Trans Global. The board of that match being a grand slam bid and made by jenter62 and blinkers. Blinkers has been unwell and out of action for the past 8 weeks but she seems to have lost none of her edge. Trans Global have done a sterling job in the last 6 weeks to remain in the top four but are now unlucky to find themselves crashing all the way to the bottom on the strenth on one loss. Whoever plays them next week should be wary!

First Sun fights off Masters

First Sun remains at the top of the ladder after a bloody battle with the Masters where both sides inflicted heavy casualties. A mere 102 imps changed hands over the 12 boards. Typical of the cut and thrust were boards 2 and 12. On board 2 First Sun extended their lead by 16 imps when they bid to a making 6 clubs while the Masters signed off in a non making 5nt. Some revenge was had on board 12 however when First Sun opened a 3 way multi at favourable vul. LHO overcalled 3h and responder pre-empted to the hilt with 3 spades and 3 points! 4th in hand thought he could beat this with his 11 count and AQTx in spades. He found the double button. Now opener who, of course, had the strong minor option, couldn't be sure what was going on and passed. First Sun did well to make 3 tricks but this was 18 imps out. Interestingly 18 on the last board was still not enough and the result of the carnage was 57-45 to First Sun.

Kiwi Teams had only its second ever draw last night as Western Gals tried to fight their way off bottom rung against the Snakes. I've mentioned before that Western Gals are the unluckiest team in the competition and last night was no exception. They were 7 imps behind with two boards to go and managed to score exactly 7 on board 11. All they needed was something good to happen on board 12. With both dealers playing a strong 1nt that was the opening bid and the contract at both tables. Both leaders chose the Qh lead from xx QJTxx JTx Txx. This wrapped up the first 5 tricks at both tables and then declarer had 8 tricks on top! No chances of generating an imp there! The 31-31 all draw means that the Snakes not only held their position but they get to go up one place as Judy + North Shore drop a place because they haven't been able to play for two weeks. The Snakes are now in line to challenge for second or third on the ladder and with 3 weeks to go are a good bet to make it all the way to the top!

Other matches saw the higher placed teams grind out wins so that there was only the one change to the ladder. Next weeks draw will be interesting however as many of the higher ranked teams in the mid to lower ladder are due for a crack at teams in the top half.

Ladder Positions after Round 6

First Sun see the light

Week four has seen our third new team climb to the top. This week First Sun (who have three members from Gisborne) will not only see the light first but will see it the brightest. They have displaced the Masters with a convincing 43-20 win. Congratulations to them.

The only other change to the ladder positions occured at the bottom end. The Central Climbers had spent the entire competition on the bottom rung and were so desparate they changed their name to Central Cellar Dwellers. This seemed to work as they had a 47-7 win over the Western Gals. The win was not as convincing as the scoreboard suggested. Central Climbers member cascade (aka Wayne Burrows) has done an analysis of some of the hands which suggests that Western Gals didn't do too much wrong on a lot of the hands where they lost imps. Go to http://newzealandbridge.blogspot.com/2008/08/kiwiteams-080813-few-hands.html to see Wayne's insightful analysis.

Spare a thought for Western Gals. They started at 6th on the ladder. The vagaries of the draw has seen them drawn against teams below them in all three rounds they have played. On the first two occasions they won against more fancied oponents. However, on the third occasion, when drawn against the bottom placed team and with the most to lose they couldn't repeat the feat. So, although they are now bottom placed team, they certainly don't deserve to be there.
