Palmy Punters take Nov Knock

In a wild but close final the Palmy Punters have prevailed over the Auckland Tigers in the inaugral kiwi teams November Knockout. Both teams were battle fit after close wins in the semi-finals. In the final no less that 77 imps were exchanged as both sides socked it out. The Auckland Tigers needed 10 imps on the last board but could only manage 7. The final score 40-37 to the southern team.

Close Matches in first round of November Knockout

The November Knockout got underway tonight with three relatively close matches. The BERGlars prevailed over Mintt's Moments by 16 imps whilst the Palmy Punters had a winning margin of 15 over KAMM Carr's. The story of the round however came in the match between Auckland Tigers and DEAP Thinkers. The latter were ahead by 4 imps going into the last Board. At one table they chose to defend a vulnerable 3d doubled whilst at the other they defended 3s not vul and undoubled. Unfortunatly 3d made 5 and the net result was -14 imps.

The good news for DEAP Thinkers is that their 10 imp loss was the narrowest of the three losses which means that they are straight through to the plate final on 24th November.

The semi-finals for the Cup will be played on 17th November. They will be fought out between this weeks winners together with Homers Heros who, as top seeds, had the bye this week. Full details of all teams and how the draw works are at http://kiwiteams.blogspot.com/2008/11/draw-and-details-for-november-knockout.html.

Draw and Details for November Knockout

We have ended up with 7 teams in the November Knockout. Seven teams is not ideal but is manageable. All teams will get at least two “live” games. Teams who have a bye will always be provided with a casual game unless they specifically ask, before 5pm on the Monday, that they not play at all.

The teams entered are:

Homers Hero’s: patricck/quikjanz & barry/jenm
BERGlars: gerry/tarakiwi & diatribe/bruzo
Palmy Punters: ljs/noelwz & janwhy/ken436
DEAP Thinkers: davetaupo/paul3210 & buch99/blinkers
Auckland Tigers: hoki/gogga & tigerboy/clavis
KAMM Carr’s: kotuku/acolitecs & manawa/mccullagh
Mintt’s Moments: glennis/gillyfleur & jaymac/mintt

The seeded draw for round 1 is:

Match 1: BERGlars: gerry/tarakiwi & diatribe/bruzo v Mintt’s Moments: glennis/gillyfleur & jaymac/mintt
Match 2: KAMM Carr’s: kotuku/acolitecs & manawa/mccullagh v Palmy Punters: ljs/noelwz & janwhy/ken436
Match 3: Auckland Tigers: hoki/gogga & tigerboy/clavis v DEAP Thinkers: davetaupo/paul3210 & buch99/blinkers

Homers Hero’s: patricck/quikjanz & barry/jenm have been seed straight into the semi final. However they will still have a “casual” match tonight as follows:

Match 4: Homers Hero’s: patricck/quikjanz & barry/jenm v Stroppy Gamblers: gambler3/stroppy & minuet/andrewnz

Please note that captains are named first and it is the responsibility of the captain of the first named (home) team to set up the match. The home team captain chooses which pairs play each other.

Rounds 2 and 3:
Next week Homers Heros will play the winner of Match 3 and the winners of Matches 1 and 2 will play off. The winners of these matches will contest the final on the 24th November and the losers will play off for 3rd and 4th.

The Plate event will run as follows. The losing team from week 1 who loses by the least margin will qualify for the plate final and will only play a “casual” match next week. The other two losers will play off for the right to contest the plate final. The loser of that match will just play a casual match on the 24th November. The least loser from round 1 and the winner of the round 2 match will play off for the Plate on 24th November.

May the best team win!

Climbers reach the top

It's been and long and fraught ascent but the Central Climbers made it to the top of the ladder last night. The Snakes, who had beaten them twice previously, and who probably have the best overall record in the competition, self destructed in the last two boards. Earlier on they had given up 5 imps as a result of a misclick which wasn't noticed in time to use the undo button. It was a portent of things to come. With 3 boards to go it was 22-11 to the Snakes. Then nikzti/suescott for the snakes doubled and caught the weak 1nt. gerry/tarakiwi of the climbers wriggled and squirmed (snakes would have been proud of them) but nikzti/suescott kept their bottle and kept doubling. They collected 1100 against a vul game at the other table. It was now 32-11 to the Snakes and that should have been that. Next board nikzti/suescott had a gerber accident and played in 4c which gave 11 imps. On the final board at the other table jonz continued the kiwi teams tradition of strange and unusual things happening on the last board of matches by finding a different kind of abberation. She was declaring 3nt after partner had trasferred to spades. A cow flew by which momentarily distracted her into thinking she was playing in spades. The result was a vulnerable game swing and the final result 35-32 to the Climbers.

The bronze medal play off saw The Masters convincingly beat Western Gals 34-1. I don't have any details of this match. Perhaps one of the participants could post a comment filling us in.

In other mathes the higher teams prevailed so that the only change in the final week was at the top.

So (drum roll) I hereby present the medals:

Gold: - Central Climbers

Silver: - Snakes

Bronze: - The Masters

Thanks to all who participated. Running a ladder was a bit of an experiment and I'm not sure whether or not it worked that well and whether in future we would be best to try knock-outs, round-robins and/or swiss events. I would REALLY appreciate your feedback. Please post your comments below. See http://kiwiteams.blogspot.com/2008/09/posting-of-comments.html for how to post comments.

Snakes Secure Second

The Snakes won a close fought encounter against the Masters last night to maintain their spot at the top of the ladder. With only one week to go and with the last round involving first against second the Snakes cannot now finish worst than second. Of course they will be hoping for another win next week against Central Climbers, a team they have beaten twice already in this event. Central Climbers may be coming into form however as they sucessfully defended their second spot against previous leaders First Sun.

Lower down Western Gals and Judy + North Shore both won against teams below them meaning that for the first time in the event there was no change to the ladder positions.

It was a cruel slam hand which decided the fight for the top spot. You hold xx Kx AKJxxx Axx. Partner deals and opens with the auction starting 1s - 2d - 3s. After that you find out that you and partner hold all the aces and all the kings. Do you sign off, bid slam or grand slam? Who knows? I'm waiting for someone who knows more about biding than me to write the hand up! What I can tell you is that tuckaway opted for 7s. Cruelly that cost 22 imps as there is always one loser (a trump) and the hand was played in 4s on a slightly different auction at the other table. The Snakes won 32-19 so the result would have been different if tuckaway had opted for 6s!

Ladder Positions after Round 8

1. Snakes: susiecue, janwhy, nikzti, suescott, jonz, boatman.
2. Central Climbers: gerry, tarakiwi, kermit, cascade, diatribe.

Snakes Slither to Summit

The ladder had a big shake up this week as the draw contained matches where teams were generally 4 or 5 rungs apart. This was necessary in order to avoid having too many repeat matches.

The big match was the leaders, First Sun, up against the 5th placed Snakes. Aggressive game bidding by the Snakes on boards 3 and 4 saw a double game swing and a vulnerable swing to net 27 imps and effectively end the contest. First Sun fought on well but the Snakes ended their reign of 3 weeks at the top win a 46-25 win.

Central Climbers have risen to the second rung with a good win against Aussie Flavoured. It seems that their alternate name of Central Celler Dwellars will no be required. This team seems to have finally struck form with some being unkind enough to suggest that it was no co-incidence that tarakiwi was at the rugby last night!

In previous weeks, despite the reverse grid, lower runged teams have really struggled to beat their higher ranked opponents. The week The Masters were the only team to fend off the challenge from below. In a very close match the 13 imps exchanged on board 4 proved decisive. A very difficult 6nt was available. Tuckaway and Mastersg signed off in 5nt. Buch99 and Clarkson bid 6nt at the other table but buch99 couldn't quite bring it in. The Masters survived 25-21.

The previously unlucky Western Gals scored a 43-4 win against Trans Global. The board of that match being a grand slam bid and made by jenter62 and blinkers. Blinkers has been unwell and out of action for the past 8 weeks but she seems to have lost none of her edge. Trans Global have done a sterling job in the last 6 weeks to remain in the top four but are now unlucky to find themselves crashing all the way to the bottom on the strenth on one loss. Whoever plays them next week should be wary!

First Sun fights off Masters

First Sun remains at the top of the ladder after a bloody battle with the Masters where both sides inflicted heavy casualties. A mere 102 imps changed hands over the 12 boards. Typical of the cut and thrust were boards 2 and 12. On board 2 First Sun extended their lead by 16 imps when they bid to a making 6 clubs while the Masters signed off in a non making 5nt. Some revenge was had on board 12 however when First Sun opened a 3 way multi at favourable vul. LHO overcalled 3h and responder pre-empted to the hilt with 3 spades and 3 points! 4th in hand thought he could beat this with his 11 count and AQTx in spades. He found the double button. Now opener who, of course, had the strong minor option, couldn't be sure what was going on and passed. First Sun did well to make 3 tricks but this was 18 imps out. Interestingly 18 on the last board was still not enough and the result of the carnage was 57-45 to First Sun.

Kiwi Teams had only its second ever draw last night as Western Gals tried to fight their way off bottom rung against the Snakes. I've mentioned before that Western Gals are the unluckiest team in the competition and last night was no exception. They were 7 imps behind with two boards to go and managed to score exactly 7 on board 11. All they needed was something good to happen on board 12. With both dealers playing a strong 1nt that was the opening bid and the contract at both tables. Both leaders chose the Qh lead from xx QJTxx JTx Txx. This wrapped up the first 5 tricks at both tables and then declarer had 8 tricks on top! No chances of generating an imp there! The 31-31 all draw means that the Snakes not only held their position but they get to go up one place as Judy + North Shore drop a place because they haven't been able to play for two weeks. The Snakes are now in line to challenge for second or third on the ladder and with 3 weeks to go are a good bet to make it all the way to the top!

Other matches saw the higher placed teams grind out wins so that there was only the one change to the ladder. Next weeks draw will be interesting however as many of the higher ranked teams in the mid to lower ladder are due for a crack at teams in the top half.

Ladder Positions after Round 6

1. First Sun: mumofthree, kiwiannie, acolitecs, davetaupo, carriemac1, glennis.

First Sun see the light

Week four has seen our third new team climb to the top. This week First Sun (who have three members from Gisborne) will not only see the light first but will see it the brightest. They have displaced the Masters with a convincing 43-20 win. Congratulations to them.

The only other change to the ladder positions occured at the bottom end. The Central Climbers had spent the entire competition on the bottom rung and were so desparate they changed their name to Central Cellar Dwellers. This seemed to work as they had a 47-7 win over the Western Gals. The win was not as convincing as the scoreboard suggested. Central Climbers member cascade (aka Wayne Burrows) has done an analysis of some of the hands which suggests that Western Gals didn't do too much wrong on a lot of the hands where they lost imps. Go to http://newzealandbridge.blogspot.com/2008/08/kiwiteams-080813-few-hands.html to see Wayne's insightful analysis.

Spare a thought for Western Gals. They started at 6th on the ladder. The vagaries of the draw has seen them drawn against teams below them in all three rounds they have played. On the first two occasions they won against more fancied oponents. However, on the third occasion, when drawn against the bottom placed team and with the most to lose they couldn't repeat the feat. So, although they are now bottom placed team, they certainly don't deserve to be there.

Central Climbers Win

I thought I would celebrate the Central Climber's first win by posting a few hands from the match on another blog that I have just started. Since it turned into quite a long post I decided not to clog up Russell's announcements here.

You can have a look over herehttp://newzealandbridge.blogspot.com/2008/08/kiwiteams-080813-few-hands.html

Russell let me know if you would like this sort of thing posted here.

Masters Stay on Top

Round 3 of the Kiwi Teams Ladder event saw The Masters as the first team to hold off a challenge for the top spot. Aussie Flavoured were repelled with apparent ease. Further down First Sun moved up into third spot while further down again the Snakes started their move up the ladder by displacing the Mavericks. At the bottom, as always, the Central Climbers remained! Judy + North Shore proved too good for them this week. In a desparate effort to bring about a change in fortune the Central Climbers have decided to take up the suggestion of mastersg and change their name to the Central Sinkers! If you have any other suggestions for possible names please let us know by posting a comment! (Click on "comments" at the end of this article).

I have not noticed any particular hands of note this week but if you have one, or have anything else of interest please post a comment below. Cascade tells me that anyone can post a comment and I'm interested to see it in action.

News - New Leader for Ladder

Round 2 of the ladder competition saw The Masters (mastersg, tuckaway, clientje, cyber, ikanarat) jump to the top rung. A very tight match against incumbants Trans Global saw The Masters one imp behind with one board to go. A defensive error allowed a 3S part score to slip through meaning that a 1 imp gain (which would have left the match drawn) became a 7 imp gain and a 33-27 win for The Masters. According to the rules a draw would have left Trans Global at the top, but alas, it wasn't to be.

A remarkable feature of this round was that all matches were close with the biggest winning margin being 7 imps in the super tight match where the Western Gals beat the Snakes 9-2.

Another interesting feature is that for the second week in a row the only match that has seen a change in ladder position has been the battle for the top spot. This is quite surprising given that the starting ladder position was a reverse seeding. I'm afraid to say that tarakiwi's Central Climbers have been left languishing at the bottom for the second week in a row. We're now contemplating a change of name! :-)

The full results for tonights matches will be posted on this site very shortly.

Ladder Positions after Round 2

News - Ladder Competition Commences

The Wednesday Ladder Competition comenced last Wednesday with 9 teams competing. The initial ladder positions are at http://kiwiteams.blogspot.com/2008/07/ladder-positions.html. Teams were seeded with the top seeded team starting at the bottom of the ladder and the bottom seeded team starting at the top!

Results largely went against seedings with the result that most teams have so far held their starting positions. At the bottom, the Central Climbers stumbled at the first rung by losing to the Snakes who failed to slide. The Mavericks were fancied to beat the Western Gals but it wasn't to be with the ladies from New Plymouth holding firm. Likewise Judy + North Shore could not budge the lesser fancied First Sun (including two from Gisborne). The Masters were the unlucky team to be drawn for a non ladder match. They will get a tilt at the top of the ladder this week.

Undoubtedly the match of the round was the top of the ladder clash between Aussie Flavoured (the incumbent leaders) and Trans Global. After 11 tight and hard fought boards Aussie Flavoured were leading by 13-9. Then on board 12 south held T6543 A3 KT83 KT. At one table North showed spade support with an 18-19 count and 4s was the resting place. At the other table North opened 1d and then showed a balanced 18-19 count over south's 1s. This was enough to tempt a bold South to leap all the way to 6d! North, with his 3433 shape, converted this to 6s which was icy as the cards lay. This earned Trans Global 13 imps and a 22-13 win, raising them to the top of the ladder. Well done to hermman for his bold bidding!

What is Kiwi Teams?

Kiwi Teams are regular teams matches that I (tarakiwi) organise regularly on BBO (Bridge Base Online). Kiwi Teams has been running since 5th March 2008. Matches are of 12 boards with a barometer. Kibbitzers and undo’s are allowed. Kiwi alerting rules apply. There is no requirement to play regularly and entries will be accepted even as a one off. Entries can be by team, pair or individual.

Currently (July 2008) matches occur every Wednesday at 8 pm NZ time. However, from October 2008 I'm planning to change to Monday nights. Wednesday nights may continue if I can find someone else to organise them.

Kiwi Teams is designed for, but by no means exclusive to, kiwis (New Zealanders). Most players are kiwis who play acol. The time of play and alerting rules are set to suit kiwis. All communictions regarding Kiwi Teams are in English. However, non kiwis are most welcome and we have a number of non kiwi regulars. You are free to play any system or carding methods. All standards of play are catered for.

In July 2008 we started a ladder competition which will run until mid September. Most matches during this time will be part of that competition but I will still arrange casual matches for anyone that enters before 5 pm on the night of play.

Each week an email is sent to a distribution list calling for entries. If you want to be added to my distribution list just email me or if you don't have my email send a message to tarakiwi on BBO requesting to be added to the list and giving your email address. (I don't want to publish my email on the web because it always seems to lead to an increase in spam!)

News - Blog site for Kiwi Teams

Thanks to cascade (Wayne Burrows) Kiwi Teams now has a blog site. The site can be found at http://kiwiteams.blogspot.com/. I intend to publish all draws, results, rules, information and news relating to Kiwi Teams on a regular basis.

I always appreciate feedback and feedback on this blogsite will be no exception.

How to Set up Kiwi Teams Matches on BBO

  1. It’s not hard to set up matches on BBO but it’s a good idea to have a practice beforehand if you’re a first timer.
  2. Click on “click to play or watch bridge”, then “Team Matches” then click on “create match” and a box comes up for you to complete. Call the match “Kiwi Teams Match 1” (or whatever number it is). You don’t need to fill out “description” or “director”. Change the number of boards to 12. Tick the “barometer” and “allow undos” boxes. Then fill in the team names and players BBO names. Take care to spell everyone’s name exactly right. Take care to ensure you have the correct pairs playing as team mates (team members should be together in either the "Team 1" or the "Team 2" box). Then check everything and then click “create match” (bottom left). You will see everyone accepting and then after a little while the match magically starts. You sometimes get an error message that someone is not online. This usually means (for me anyway) that you have not quite got their name right but it may mean that they have logged off for some reason.
  3. I recommend that you start on the set up process about 5 mins beforehand so that when 8 o’clock comes around all you have to do is click the “create match” button. It is also a good idea to make sure that all of the players in your match are on your friends list. That way you can “see” everyone and check in advance that they are all logged on. To add a person to your friends list when they are not online click on your own name when you are in the lobby, then click the friends tab, complete the friends BBO name in the box provided then click “add”.
  4. If any player in your match is not online and available to play by 8.00 pm then you should arrange for a replacement. The quickest way of doing that is to call for participants from the lobby. Do that by using “the lobby” option in the chat box and sending a message like “need one adv + player for 12 board teams match – please message me”. This usually brings at least one response within short order. Choose the person you think most suitable, let them know that they are in and include their name in the team list. It is generally polite to then send a message to the lobby that the team is full.
  5. BBO has further instructions about the “create match” function as part of its help site. This is the link to get there: http://www.bridgebase.com/help/3/common/text/index.html. Click on “contents” then “team matches” then click in the “create a match” area to get information specific to setting up team matches.

Rules for Wednesday Ladder Competition

  1. Teams can enter as teams of 4, 5 or 6. Entrants must nominate a captain capable of setting up matches on BBO. The real names, email addresses and BBO nicknames of all team members must be given. Please also provide a team name (otherwise team names will be invented!).
  2. Entries close on Tuesday the 22nd July 2008. Teams entering after this date can join in but they will start at the bottom of the ladder.
  3. The competition goes for 9 weeks commencing 23rd July 2008.
  4. Teams may play as many or as few rounds as they like however there are demotions under rule 12c for inactivity.
  5. Each week the captain of teams wishing to play must enter by emailing the team line up to xxx prior to Wednesday 5.00 pm.
  6. Teams may play with one outside substitute. The substitute may be a member of another team but should be of similar or weaker playing strength than the average strength of the team the substitute is playing for.
  7. Each week a draw will be done according to the following ranked priorities where possible:
    a. Teams to play an equal number of matches against teams above them as against teams below them,
    b. Matches to be between teams within 3 places of each other, and
    c. Matches will not be between teams who have played within the previous three weeks.
  8. The draw will be sent to all team members by 7.50 pm each Wednesday.
  9. Teams will be designated home and away. The captain of the home team is responsible for setting up the match at 8.00 pm. The home team captain chooses which pairs play NS and which EW. The captain of the home team must obtain a substitute from the lobby for any player(s) not online by 8.00 pm. Matches are of 12 boards, undo’s and kibitzers allowed, barometer on.
  10. During matches NZ Bridge alerting and pre-alerting rules apply.
  11. The starting position of teams on the ladder will be determined by the average rating points of team members who have NZ Bridge ratings. If teams have less than two such members then an average rating for the team will be assigned (guessed at!). The team with the lowest average will start at the top of the ladder. Then the next lowest and so on down to the team with the highest average rating who will start at the bottom!
  12. After each round the ladder positions will change as follows:
    a. When the lower ranked team wins it swaps places with its opponent,
    b. When the higher ranked team wins or the match is drawn there is no change, and
    c. Any team that has not entered for a second or subsequent consecutive week or any team that doesn’t enter for the final week will swap with the team immediately below it, except if it is already at the bottom or if all the teams below it are also subject to this sub-rule. This sub-rule shall be applied first to the lowest team that is subject to it then to the next lowest team and so on.
  13. The new ladder position will be emailed to all participants after each week.
  14. The team at the top of the ladder after the final round is the winner!
